Famous Artists

Teresa Garratt —

This term we have been learning about famous artists.

We have studied a variety of artists including, Dick Frizzell, Joan Mirò, Qi Baishi, Robert and Sonia Delauney, Charles Goldie, Ralph Hotere, Banksy, Michelle Reader, and Gunta Stölzl.

We have looked at the techniques they use in their art. Here are some of the brief art styles we've looked at. Dick Frizzell uses New Zealand's society, culture, identity, environment and house-hold items as motivations for his works. One of his most famous work is the Mickey to Tiki Tu Meke. Joan Miro uses Surrealism technique for his artwork. Surrealism paintings include everyday objects, strange creatures, different shapes, dreams and realities. The unusual combination made the viewers feel like they were in a dream. Qi Baishi artworks are known for the Whimsical, often playful style. He is one of the most well-known contemporary Chinese painters. He is credited for modernising the gongbi style of classical Chinese painting. Robert and Sonia created a new style of painting (Orphism movement) that uses very bright colours and simple geometric shapes. Both Robert and Sonia Delaunay believed that colour could be utilised in the same manner as notes could be used to create visual harmonies.

We have enjoyed learning the different techniques, we like to try all the different ways of making art.
