Pataitai Weekly Update Term 3 Week 6

Tania Gallagher —

Today was Fun Friday. We have had a funny but very exciting day. All the children have been treated to Flat Man. See below for more details...

Flat Man Visit

Flat Man is Christchurch's very own superhero. Emerging after the city's earthquakes he provided food packages to those most in need. He now visits schools, teaching kids to be their own superhero by being kind, generous and looking out for each other, as well as teaming up with other charities to help spread joy and laughter in a city that has been through so much. He's the hero Christchurch deserves and the one it needs right now. Check out some of the photos from today from our fun day.

Ako Bases/Inquiry

As part of our Ako Bases the children are up to making a sample of their product. Can you please help your child over the weekend to make their sample and bring it to school on Monday to share and ask students/teachers their opinion. This only needs to be 6-8 pieces as each person in the group is contributing to the samples.

We have included a $10 activity fee to cover the costs of the prototypes they are making over the next couple of weeks. On the last Thursday of this term they will be setting up stalls and selling their food or crafts to other students and parents. Any money raised over and above their costs will be for donated to a charity yet to be decided. If you would like to help out during the last week of term for the preparation of this, we will be sending a notice home in the next few weeks to organise this.

Reading

This week in reading some groups of students have begun a novel study. The books chosen are being read independently and then analysed further in class. We have begun to look at dissecting characters - identifying the antagonists and discussing how authors often uses exaggeration with them in order to create a stronger effect. In-depth discussion of the text with guided questions and focus will drive the reading purpose of the lesson. Each group involved will continue to have chapters assigned to them to read between class time. They have been asked not to go beyond the assigned pages as we will still be using the skill of predicting and inference within the reading groups. Other group are continuing to focus on the complex strategy of evaluation alongside specific text based reading focuses. Students in these groups are, in general, given 3-4 books per week to read at home to an adult. It is so important that these books are read every night and returned at the next reading session. One of the main strategies to improve reading is reading mileage.

Week 6 Reminders:

Please ensure your child goes to the office if you are late to get a late pass. We still have children coming into class after 8.55am without these. Can you also please remind your children that school starts at 8.55am as there are children still not being into class on time.

Children are required to wear black shoes as part of the school uniform. We have a lot of children turning up in colourful sneakers. You may wear these for Physical Literacy time only.

Have a great weekend
