Hesandu receives new swim goggles from Tracey Hickman at our Swimming Information Evening.

Lesley Black —

Could your child swim well enough to save themselves  if they found themselves in trouble in the water?

Tracey Hickman, Education Operations Manager of Swimming New Zealand, ran a swimming information evening in the Senior Hub. Many thanks to the 8 parents and little Hesandu from Room 3, who turned up in such miserable weather.

The 2014 Swimming Achievement Report shows that many of our Merrin children are struggling with their swimming skills: http://www.merrin.school.nz/curriculum-achievement-reports.html    To help address this, we  asked Tracey to speak with our community about swimming and water safety.

Tracey spoke about the Kiwi Swim Safe Programme, highlighting ways to be safer in, on and around water at school, home and in the community. She gave parents many tips to help their children become confident in water. Tracey also suggested that, for wee people, their parents take them for a visit before lessons begin, to the Christchurch  Swim School  25 Charente Way, just off Buchanans Rd in Yaldhurst  http://canterburyswimschool.co.nz/. That will dispel some of the fears and uncertainties about the complex and they can get on with the business of learning to swim right from the first lesson.

During Merrin swimming lessons, Tracey will be spending time with the classroom teachers and supporting the practical application of swimming and survival skills during their pool sessions.
