Gong Xi Fa Cai - Happy Lunar New Year

David Zehms —

The Lunar New Year began on 8 February.  We have learned interesting things about the traditions and stories that are the basis of celebrating this most auspicious day.

It began this year on 8 February. The 'it' is The Year of the Monkey. A few of our groups had fun making monkey masks.

We have learned many things that people to do at this time. They celebrate with fireworks, dragon dances, lion dances and traditional dances. They sweep the dirt and bad luck out of their houses to make room for good luck. They eat dumplings, light lanterns and make offerings to the Kitchen God. Best of all, they give young people Hom Bao, red money envelopes, to bring them good luck.

We also learned that the Zodiac Calendar is based on a folk tale in which the Jade Emperor wanted a way of measuring time.  A race was held with different animals having to cross a river.  The first twelve animals to cross the river would have a year named after them.  Some of the animals were very gracious or relaxed in crossing the river, some worked in a group and others were sneaky.  Ask your child about this!

We hope that you have a prosperous Year of the Monkey!!!
