Mahuta Weekly Newsletter

Geoff Wallis —

Next week we are looking forward to visiting Ferrymead as a part of our Inquiry Topic.

Kia ora whānau,

We hope you are all having a great weekend. Here is a quick catch up from the Mahuta team.

Strike Percussion Show

We started week 4 watching the amazing Strike Percussion Show. Here is a link to their website Strike.  They used a range of percussion instruments and held everyone spell bound. They even got a couple of the children and a couple of teachers on stage to show off their skills :-)

I have attached a photo from this event :-)

Sign Language

We were extremely lucky to have Katy Mitchell's aunty come in and teach us some sign language on Monday afternoon at our team assembly. She taught us the alphabet, colours, how to introduce ourselves, how to say good morning/afternoon and more. This was one of my highlights from the week.

Oral Language

Over the last couple of weeks we have been focusing the children's oral language on doing impromptu speeches during whānau time. This has been lots of fun!

Alongside this some of the children have begun writing their own speeches while others will be performing plays.  If your child is doing a speech these are the topics they chose from.

  • If you could change one thing in the world today what would it be?
  • The rules of my household are...
  • Is exercise really good for you?
  • Why should we protect our rivers and lakes?
  • Should dangerous breeds of dogs be banned in New Zealand?
  • Should everyone in the world only speak English?

Winter Sport

It was great to have a beautiful sunny day for our second week of winter sport.  We all had a great time and are looking forward to many more sunny Friday afternoons!

Here are a few reminders for this coming week:

On Wednesday we are off to Ferrymead for the day. We are leaving school at 9.15am and will return by 3pm. Please ensure your child has a packed lunch, drink bottle and a warm jacket. The children are to wear school uniform for this outing. During the trip, we will be looking at changes over the last 50 years in education, communication, transport etc.

Next Friday is Teacher Only Day. The teachers will be spending the day with the rest of our Cluster Schools on Professional Development. Please also note that Monday 6th June is Queen's Birthday so school will be closed on this day as well.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend. If you have any questions or queries please come in and see us or send us an email :-)

Kind regards

Mahuta Teachers
