Isabelle Cuts Hair for Charity

Isabelle Chensem —

Pantene Beautiful Lengths - Donate a Pony Tail to help make wigs for those with Cancer. Isabelle tells us how easy it is to help.

While I was participating in Te Kotiritiri this year I was looking for charities/foundations to give back to.

I had an idea to get sponsored to shave all my hair off but I wasn’t feeling brave enough.

Then I found The Pantene Beautiful Lengths website which accepts donations of pony tails.

Even though I had already completed more than enough TK challenges, I decided to go ahead and donate some of my hair to a very worthy cause.

So many people undergoing chemo or radiotherapy lose their hair and Pantene Beautiful Lengths create wigs for them. It takes 8-15 pony tails to make one wig, depending on hair, colour, type and length. They have had over 500,000 donated so far which is amazing!

So, last Thursday I prepared my hair by making sure it was clean and free of product, at least 8 inches tied in a loose pony tail and then I had the BIG CUT! I had 30 centimetres/12 inches chopped off and it’s still past my shoulders. I put it in a ziplock bag and posted it off to Auckland.

Why not donate some of your hair? You only need eight inches minimum of healthy hair and I see a lot of beautiful long pony tails around Merrin! To us it's hair but to people with cancer it helps them to recover quicker by feeling better about themselves.

I’m thinking maybe next year I'll have the whole lot shaved but stay tuned - I may get others to do it with me!
