Science Celebration!

Margaret Joyce —

The end of last term was filled with many exciting science experiences!

Not only did we get to go to the museum and learn about Galileo and all his discovery of science but we also got to share our science learning with our whānau. Over the term, we had a BIG science focus, this meant that each week we were busy experimenting and exploring the material world. There was lots of popping, dissolving, exploding and mess along the way. We made OOBLECK, we explored different bubble making mixtures, we experimented the difference with dissolving salt, jelly and sand, we popped popcorn and lots more. We then made science boards of our favourite experiment to share with our whānau. Here are some of our favourites:

Mark Rm 18: My favourite was Frogs go POP. We had to guess the ingredients to put in a film canister to make the lid on it pop off. We experimented with vinegar, baking soda, water and sugar until we found the right one. I guessed it would be vinegar and baking soda - this worked. The lid didn't pop too far but it did explode right in my face I felt wet and I could taste vinegar but I was happy it exploded.

Mia. B Rm 18: Oobleck was definitely my favourite. I liked the way it felt in my fingers. It felt gooey before we added the flour and then it became hard. We got to feel it and play with it.

Mia. L Rm 18: The Colour wheel was my favourite experiment. I like it because it was colourful. We put 3 different colours on a bit of fabric and then dropped methylated spirits onto the colours. The colours spread around and made a big multicoloured wheel!
