Litter Free lunches, the cool way to bring your lunch to school!

Toni Carter —

As part of our inquiry, we have been wondering about how we can decrease the rubbish in our school by reducing the amount of packing in our lunchboxes.

In our school, after morning tea and lunch every day there is rubbish everywhere. Even though children are asked to sit in a special place to eat, we find rubbish in the gardens, on the field, in the cloakrooms, in the playgrounds and on the courts. This makes our school look ugly and it's not good for our environment, especially when the wind blows it into the waterways. We really do worry about how this affects sea animals.

We have learnt that the most useful way for us to help our world, is to reduce the amount of rubbish going into the landfills. We decided to focus on our school, as this is where we can make a big difference.

We hope that you will help us by reducing plastic and packaging in school lunch boxes.  This means that there should be no rubbish in our lunchboxes - any wrappers could be removed at home. Reusable plastic bags and containers are a perfect way to bring in your snacks. We collect food waste to feed the worms in our worm farm and help make compost and worm juice for the gardens. We do not provide rubbish bins at lunchtime for lunchbox litter.

If you can, please support the children with this, they are very keen to do their bit to help save the planet from too much plastic.

Thanks for helping the children of Merrin School.
