Term 1 Week 11 Update

Tania Gallagher —

Another busy and very wet week is over and we are all hoping that the weather will be kind to us for our last week of Term 1. It has flown by very quickly!!

With our last week being a short week, we will continue our routines that we have worked on all term. This week has been busy and the children have continued to show us how they can manage their time learning.

We were really impressed with how the students managed themselves when we sat our first easTTle online tests this week. These were the first time the year 4 students have had this type of online testing so there has been some teaching around this for the students. We do not have the results from the tests and will not be sharing these with you as it is the process of sitting the test for the students that has been the focus. We will be doing more easTTles over the next 3 terms and we should be able to get more reliable data as the children become more familiar with the process and understanding of the test.

Reading

During reading we are continuing to focus on developing our understanding of inference. Inference requires the reader to use clues within the text to understand the author's implied meaning. Inference is understanding implicit information. It is a skill which is required to understand most written texts the students will read. Students have been guided to focus on evidence within the text to support their answers of inference based questions.

Question stems that help develop inferential based questions include;

 Why do you think …..?
 Why did …..?
 How do you know that …..?
 What might happen if …..?
 What can you infer from the picture on the page?
 Why do they …..? How do you know?
 Do you think …..? Why do you think that?
 Why does the author use the word …..?

Each child should be reading at least 20 minutes a night still and this should continue throughout the holiday period.

Maths

This week all classes have continued on with the same key ideas as last week. Please ensure your child completes IXL questions that are relevant to their learning in the classroom as this gives them the opportunity to cement the new learning.

Dates to remember:
