Matariki celebrations in Auahiroa

Alice Harris —

This week we have preparing for our Matariki Celebration

As part of our inquiry this term, we have been learning all about Matariki and why it is an important celebration in Aoteroa. We have also looked at other cultures and how they celebrate new year such as Sooul in Korea, Chinese New Year and Hogmany in Scotland. We finished the week with making Matariki decorations, creating some Matariki related art work and of course cooking some delicious Matariki Soup.

"I enjoyed using book creator to show what I have learnt about Indian new year. I learnt that one of the stars of Matariki is called Waiti and that represents fresh water" - Jay

"I have learnt that there are actually 9 stars of Matariki. During Matariki celebrations we share kai such as fresh fruit and vegetables and seafood" - Elijah

"I learnt that the name of the Nepal New Year is Navavarsha and they celebrate on the 14th of April" - Natalie

"I learnt that Matariki is a time to come together as family as a symbol of togetherness. It is also a time to remember those that have passed and set goals for the new year" - Aarav.
