Poi Toa

Toni Carter —

Team 3/4 played a fantastic game today with the Poi Toa we made a couple of weeks ago.

We loved that the sun was shining today and we could get outside and play a game. A couple of weeks ago we all made a Poi Toa each. Poi Toa is the umbrella term used to describe any Tākaro where Poi Toa were utilised. Poi Toa were used  to develop a range of skills such as; strength and conditioning needed for weaponry such as taiaha and patu. Typically Poi Toa were made from harakeke  and raupo. These  Poi should not be confused or used the same as performance Poi, like the ones we use in Kapa Haka. Each has its own place as well as tikanga attached.  Today we practiced spinning and throwing the Poi towards each team so they could try and catch them.  Lots of Poi flying through the air and not too much catching.  Great fun!
