News from Mahuta, Week 9

Laura Della Bosca —

There has been lots of exciting things happening in Mahuta this week and the students are continuing to work hard, with the end of term now in sight. Thank you to all the parents and whanau that came along to the student led conferences earlier in the week.

Student Led Conferences - By Sophia Gray

On Monday and Wednesday we had student LED conferences. Here in Mahuta we had written two stars and a wish. Two stars for what we think we are good at and a wish for something we want to get better at. We shared with our parents our goals from the start of term to our most recent goals, as well as reflections to say if we achieved them or not and what our next steps are.  We also shared some of our inquiry, our practice books for math and our favourite piece of writing so far.

Fiona - "Sharing things about my learning was actually really fun.  It was the best conference ever!"

Matatihi - Maia’s journey of bravery

This week the whole of Mahuta were treated to a performance for part of Matariki week. The story took place in a Maori village and was about a 12 year old girl who set off to find the legendary bird called The PouaKai! She ventured off past the rocky lake and the steep mountain side only to find out that the PouaKAi was flightless and  a vegetarian , So she set off with the PouaKai by her side past the steep mountain side and the rocky lake to the highest point of New Zealand Mt Aoraki. ( Mt Cook ) And then she told us all about the story of Aoraki. Maia showed great bravery through out the story and helped the Pouakai to learn how to fly.

We really enjoyed the show that the Court Theatre put on for us and we are very excited for next year when they will be back with another NEW show!

Inquiry

Again this week students were very busy exploring their own inquiries and finding out more about their big idea. As part of Iris and Lucy's learning about "How do the Japanese show their culture?", Coco's mum, came in and taught them how to make sushi. Thank you for supporting their learning, Kazuko. It looked delicious!

Writing gems from Week 9:

Ryan Li - Your mind is a garden, your ideas are plants and when you think you water them.

Jack - My throat was on fire! It felt as if I had swallowed a family of hedgehogs..

Jewel - Ouch, my mouth is on fire! My taste buds burst in annoyance! This fiery soup explodes like a volcano in my mouth.
