Year 7/8 Novel Studies

Kate Revell —

Students in year 7/8 are reading their choice of novel and attending twice-weekly book group sessions.

Many adults know the joy of a good book group, and now students in years 7 and 8 are getting to experience them too as part of literacy lessons. Each week, students choose a different 'role' in the group: discussion director, counsellor, connector, wonderer, passage picker, interesting word finder or illustrator. They are given a week to prepare their contribution, and then present during the group session. Check out some of their work below!

Students also complete creative illustration and writing tasks, learn new vocabulary, improve their inferencing, skimming and scanning skills, and answer questions to help their reading comprehension. We're all having a lot of fun - it's easy to forget that we're learning so much too! Quite a few students haven't been able to help themselves and have raced ahead and finished their books already - great effort :)
