Year 7/8s go BANG!
Here you see Chris and Savannah doing the final steps of their science based ako plan. They literally forced chemicals to react. Read below for more info.
After attending a science workshop at the University of Canterbury earlier this year Chris has been learning everything science. He included Savannah and others and soon they had a chemicals ako plan on the go.
In these photos you can see them mixing potassium chlorate and red phosphorus together... very carefully so they do not make a premature bang. Once they are together all that is needed is some sort of force. They thought, what better than a hammer? The two of them took turns at mixing then banging the chemicals together.
When they had the mixture right it let off a very loud bang (sounded like a gun shot), a quick flash and smoke. They enjoyed measuring the bangs on a decibel metre. So much literacy, maths and science all in one!
