Fun with Fractions

Zara Williams —

Our focus in Maths this term has been on fractions. It has been fun finding out how they can be used in everyday life. We admire the perseverance tamariki have shown while taking on this challenging concept.

Here are some different things tamariki have been learning and what they have enjoyed so far:

Marcus - "I am learning how to compare fractions and order the ones with different denominators. I know how to do it with fraction strips and am learning how to do it with just numbers. My favourite part of fractions is learning with pizza."

Luka - "My favourite thing I have learnt this year has been fractions. I know what a whole, quarter, third and half are. I am good at writing and drawing them. Maths is my best subject."

Cindy - "In maths I have really liked doing equivalent fractions and I would like to try harder ones. I think they are fun to add and subtract. I like doing fractions a lot and like sometimes teaching others how to do them. I would be able to use them outside of school to compare how many buildings there are and sharing food."

Harlen - "I enjoy learning about fractions because I find them easy. The most interesting part so far has been comparing fractions. I am excited to learn more about them because I am very good at them and would like to teach them to others."

Ophelia - "I have learnt that in equivalent fractions you have to do the same to the numerator to and denominator. When adding or subtracting fractions the denominator will stay the same like 1/8+3/8=4/8. I find fractions interesting because learning something new makes my brain grow."

Ka pai tamariki ma - Well done!
