Why senior school is fun at Merrin

Belinda Cullen-Reid —

The Year 7 and 8's have been learning how to write to persuade others. Below they argue that school life at Merrin in the Seniors is lots of fun. Have they got you convinced?

"It's fun at Merrin because there's always something interesting just around the corner. For example today the Pupil Council ran an Easter Treasure Hunt. We had to find two popsicle sticks around the school. Once you found the sticks you took them back to the hall to claim your prize. Different coloured sticks represented different prizes. I was expecting to just get a cookie or a lolly but I won a whole chocolate rabbit. I felt really surprised and excited. I'm going to melt it at home and dip strawberries into it," Kayden Grant.

"An example of the fun things Year 7 and 8's do is go on camp each year. On the third week of this term we went to Hanmer Springs Holiday Park for our school camp for 2018. The first thing we did was go for a walk to Conical Hill.  The funny thing was Mr Barr didn't know where he was going.  We had to turn back because we had no idea where we were. My favourite parts of camp was the Hanmer Springs Hot Pools, the hydroslide and making Miss Barr go down the super bowl.  On the last day of camp we went to Kaiapoi to do water sports.  We went kayaking with Mrs Cullen-Reid and I liked that we could try out new experiences," Aaliyah Whiu-Bennett.

"This year we dressed up for St Patrick's Day and I wore a leprechaun mask and a green tutu with suspenders.  I went to the $2 Store and saw the items and thought it would be cool to wear.  Even though it got sweaty and itchy I guess it looked cool.  I liked going to school in the morning and seeing people's faces.  Lots of people didn't know who I was.  This is the kind of fun you can have when you go to Merrin," Cooper Sweeney.

"A reason why it's fun at the Seniors is that we do Ako Bases during Inquiry where we get to choose what we want to learn. I chose Pancake Art because I wanted to do baking.  It involves measurement so I can practice my Maths.  Also I got to do art by making things like smiley faces and other designs using different colours. What I like about Ako Bases is you are documenting what you are doing and it keeps you on track.  It helps you know what's next.  That's what's helpful with it," Genavieve Ferguson.
