Cooking with the Stars- ‘EGYPTIAN BREAD EDITION’

Stephen Simpson —

These lucky people got the chance to make Egyptian bread right here at school...Let's see what they got up to!

Every day in every class, teachers give out Values Awards that recognise when your children do things we value most in our school culture...things that grow our school family-whanaungatanga, learning-ako, leadership-rangatiratanga, guardianship-kaitiakitanga and care for all others-manaakitanga.

...The things that make Merrin School famous for being a family more than just a school...

Then every Monday at assembly, these Values Awards go into a draw to see whose name will be pulled out to win a fun treat or cool experience…

On Monday of Week 2, Liam, Samuel, Emma and Tillie had their names chosen to go to the kitchen and enjoy ‘Cooking with the Stars’ where they experienced the fun of making and baking Egyptian bread with one of our school whānau’s talented, caring and connected mums...the wonderful Maha Galal, Norhan's mum.

Here’s what our Whetū Kohara said about what Maha taught them:

“The Egyptian bread was REALLY REALLY YUM!”

“Egyptian bread smells beautiful.”

‘We learnt how to say and write ‘bread’ in arabic.”

‘We helped each other to know what to do.”

“It was fun!”

But poor teachers...every kaiako who walked through the staffroom afterwards said:

“Ooh! What’s that LOVELY smell?”

-But they never found out... ‘cause the bread was all gone in seconds...our chefs had taken it to share with a lucky class who were ‘Treated like a pharaoh’ for an afternoon and...the bread all just...sort of... “disappeared”!

Yes, -a mysterious disappearance indeed. One to even rival the riddle of the pyramids themselves….???

IF YOU WEREN’T THE LUCKY ONES THIS WEEK, DON’T WORRY!

Next week our foodie train takes us half way across the world from the land of the pyramids to Korea -where it’s winter at the moment.

And our Week 3 special STAR chef is going to show you how to make something warm and yummy that koreans love eating at this time of year.…

So Kohara whetū! Keep living and breathing our school values and earn those Values Awards...and you might be the first to find out what it’s going to be!

One thing’s for sure, it’s going to be fun and it’s going to be yummy!
