Threading necklaces

Annalese Patterson —

In Room 2 we are very lucky to have Ann Wilson a specialist teacher come and visit us on Wednesday mornings.

Ann works alongside children to support them in their learning. She creates fun and engaging activities for the children. Today the challenge was to thread the beads onto the string to make a necklace. Phoebe and Leon had a great time and were very proud of what they had accomplished. We call the movement of threading a fine motor skill.

Why are fine motor skills so important to practice?

Small movements, such as picking up small objects, using pegs, buttoning a shirt and threading, are all activities that use the small muscles of the fingers. As these muscles get stronger, children are able to hold a pencil more comfortably, hold a spoon correctly and have more control over smaller movements. Mastering fine motor skills requires precision, co-ordination and plenty of concentration.

Tu meke Phoebe and Leon. Choice!
