Term 2, Week 5

Nicky Hebberd —

Wow! We are going to be hitting the halfway point in the term already!

Kia ora whānau,

Our Learning

Writing

This week we have carried on with our writing about our country of choice and the activities you can do there. We will continue with this aspect in Week 5 and will aim to complete the publishing by the end of the week. This area has given us many good challenges around how to research, read for understanding, paraphrasing and publishing.

Maths

Miss Hebberd's Math Group - We will be moving into graphs in Week 5. We will specifically be learning about Tally and Picture graphs. At home your child can be working within this area on IXL.

Ms Gallagher's Maths Group -  We have begun Multiplication. We will continue this next week and then move onto Division.  At home you can be working on adding equal groups and multiplication within 40.

Ms Mansfield's Maths Group - We are still working on Multiplication and Division. At home you can be practising this on IXL.

Reading

This week within reading the groups have been focusing on text based objectives alongside the over-riding strategy of making predictions within texts. This strategy relies on students looking for clues within a narrative and then making sound prediction about what will happen.

This strategy is supported by the reader's prior experiences and requires them to justify their prediction with evidence from the text. It is a strategy that also supports the reader's ability to make sound inference within the text. Predictions can occur before or during reading and may alter depending on the information given by a narrative. Students are encouraged within reading to pause and make predictions rather than rush towards the ending or turning to the back to find to the answer! Discussing this strategy, and other reading strategies, with your child helps them, as a reader, identify what they need to do whilst reading in order to better understand the text.

Mihimihi - All children have a Mihimihi and are beginning to practise this at school. Attached is the template we use. You may also like to have a go at writing your own, I am sure your child would love to help.

Reports - Mid year reports will be going home at the end of this term. In Year 4, they all receive a mid year report and an end of year report.

Spell-a-thon - Information will come out next Friday from the PTA. Each child will receive individual packs with everything they need.

Te Kotiritiri Challenges - If your child wants to participate in the challenges, please return the notice. The challenges can be started now with them being completed by Term 4. A scrap book for the challenges was allowed for on the stationery list for Year 4 so your child should already have this in their book box to take home.  Attached is a copy of the Te Kotiritiri Challenges sheet incase you have lost the cost that went home.

STEM - This weeks challenge required children to work in groups to make a bridge using specific materials. See the photos attached.
