Kaitiakitanga and Learning in Year 5/6

Peri Marks —

"Kaitiakitanga means guardianship and protection. It is a way of managing the environment, based on the Māori world view. A kaitiaki is a guardian. This can be a person or group that cares for an area such as a lake or forest." Taken from https://teara.govt.nz/en/kaitiakitanga-guardianship-and-conservation

Inquiry

This term, our school focus is on kaitiakitanga. As a team, we collected a piece of rubbish each from the school grounds and placed it in a whole. Near the end of the term, we are going to dig up the rubbish to see what happens to it during that time. All of the students wrote a hypothesis about what they think will happen to the rubbish.

Reading

During Reading, students will be involved in guided reading sessions. Those that are not involved in these sessions will be completing STEPsWeb and ako plans. The ako plans have questions and research skills to discover more about ecosystems, water, plastic, and paper.

Writing/Oral Language

Over the next few weeks, we will be writing persuasive or argumentative text in preparation for the speech competitions.

Maths

This term, we continue the focus of multiplication and division. Please support our programme by encouraging your child to learn their number knowledge progressions.
