Matariki Celebration - Friday 21st June 7.30am

Laura Della Bosca —

We would love for you to come and celebrate Matariki with us at Merrin School.

What is Matariki and why is it important?

Matariki signals the Māori New Year. It is a time of renewal and celebration in New Zealand that begins with the rising of the Matariki star cluster (the Pleiades or Seven Sisters) Matariki is a celebration of people, culture, language and history.

Next Monday and Wednesday throughout the day the children will be participating in different Matariki workshops. The workshops will allow the children to work together and spend time with children from different year levels.

Our Matariki Celebration

On Friday 21st June at 7.30am our school will hold its own Matariki celebration.  When you arrive at school please go to your child's classroom first to drop off your food and pick up their lantern.

Our celebration will start with a performance on the court. We recommend that you bring a cushion to sit on during this time and something to keep you warm. (It will be very cold on the concrete).

After the performance, there will be a shared breakfast back in the classrooms. Please bring a plate of food from your culture to share. If your child has any allergies please make sure you bring something that they can eat and speak with your child's teacher on how their choices will be monitored if you are unable to attend.

We look forward to seeing you all there!
