Term 3 Week 4

Tania Gallagher —

We have a busy week with lots of intensive learning happening.

Kia ora whānau,

There is a lot of sickness doing the rounds at the moment. If your child is unwell, please keep them at home. When they come to school still not better, they spread them to other students and teachers. With so many different illnesses like vomiting, coughing, runny nose and fevers, it is really important that we are all diligent in not sharing it.

Reading - This week we have continued to focus on evaluation as a driving strategy within the class, reinforcing the idea that learners always need to refer to the text for their evidence. Discussion has also centred about the knowledge that any evaluation requires sound inference skills, and unlike prediction has a right or wrong answer. Some question starters which encourage evaluation include:

Do you agree with…? What choice would you have made…? What would you recommend…? What is your opinion of…? Is there another solution? Which is more important…? What are the pros/cons of…?

With their answers students need to justify with evidence from the text. It is evident that some students are not reading consistently every night for at least 20 minutes. As teachers we have encouraged this habit as reading mileage is vital for the improvement of reading skills. Please have your child read to you for at least 20 minutes a day in order to help improve all their reading skills.

Maths Please follow up the class learning with 30 minutes a week on IXL. This is part of our expectations on what you can be doing at home with your child.
