"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." (Pablo Picasso)

A group of budding artists creating during Discovery.

One of the Ako Station and Discovery activities that bring a lot of pleasure to the children is art. Their artwork so often comes from sensory experiences inside and outside of school, and the freedom to create in their own way. These masterpieces can form the basis for discussions that develop oral language skills and storytelling. Children learn to work both independently and collaboratively to produce their works as they share resources. They often complement each other as they notice their peers' achievements. The NZ Curriculum states, "As students express and interpret ideas within creative, aesthetic, and technological frameworks, their confidence to take risks is increased."

Take time to explore Christchurch Art Gallery, Te Puna o Waiwhetū with your child. See what they have to say about the exhibitions!
