Merrin School Hangi

Tania Gallagher —

We are delighted to inform you that to celebrate Matariki this year, Merrin School will be laying a Hangi.

Our Hangi will be laid on Thursday 29th June in the morning and ready to eat at 2pm on this day. All of the students will get to see the process of a Hangi during the day will have some activities to learn more about a Hangi. We welcome you to join us for at 1.30pm when our Kapa Haka students will perform before we eat.

A Hangi is a special way of cooking food under the ground using red hot rocks and steam. When the rocks are hot they are carefully rolled or lifted into a pit in the ground and wire baskets of food are quickly put on top. The food in our Hangi will be chicken, chops, potatoes, carrots, cabbage, pumpkin and kumara.

Each child will have the opportunity to be a part of this experience by purchasing a meal from the Hangi. We have a limited number of Hangi available so it will be the first 350 sold that will get this opportunity.

We would like to offer the community the following options, so that everyone may enjoy this experience:

  • Children: $5 each
  • Adults: $10 each

Please fill out the slip on the form below and return it to the school office with your payment by Friday 23rd June. Once payment is received, you will be sent home tickets for your meal that will need to be presented on the day of our Hangi.

Please note: Due to the volume of food being prepared, we are not able to provide for particular dietary requirements.
