STEAM Popcorn Snack Box Challenge by Katherine Wilson
Katherine Wilson — June 3, 2020
We have been enjoying problem solving by thinking like scientists, technologists, engineers, artists and mathematicians!
Here are several of our experiences from our STEAM learning so far...
Room 10 designed and created a paper cup that could hold water without leaking, using only the equipment provided. Room 10 had to think carefully about "what was going to stop the cup from leaking?"
Room 11 investigated sugar crystals. They learnt about reversible and irreversible changes. Over the past week, Room 11 has analysed the different changes of matter and why their crystals have formed in certain ways.
Room 12 observed chemical changes in their popping candy soda experiment. They discovered the following results from their four tests...
TEST 1 - Yes, a chemical reaction occurred. The evidence is the gas that inflated the balloon.
TEST 2 - Yes. The evidence is that gas bubbles (foam) formed.
TEST 3 - No. There is no evidence of a chemical reaction.
TEST 4 - Yes. The evidence is the precipitate (curdled milk).
Room 14 compared physical and chemical changes by dissolving lollies. They learnt how the liquid used affects the speed with which a lolly dissolves. Room 14 carefully recorded their findings and were surprised by the results! They have also enjoyed completing Room 10's paper cup challenge!
Room 15 engineered a balloon powered car and were challenged to make it travel 1.5 metres. They also had the design constraints of ensuring their car was sturdy and travelled in a straight line. Room 15 also designed a decorative but secure popcorn snack box using just paper and a paper plate. They had to jog a lap of the field with their snack boxes to ensure no pieces fell out to complete their task.
And the STEAM reviews are in...
"I think the balloon car project was pretty good" - Laci, Room 15.
"I think the popcorn project was very interesting and easy because we folded the paper plate and put paper over it. We had to do a lap of the field and not even one of the popcorn pieces fell out. The best part was we got to eat it afterwards" - Charlotte, Room 15.
"My experience was amazing. It was really fun and easy to do" - Ransi, Room 15.
"Outstanding creativity and collaboration from everyone!" - Miss Wilson.
"I've enjoyed watching the crystals form." - Jasmin, Room 11.
"I enjoyed looking at the lollies and how they changed. I really wanted to eat them!" - Kouta, Room 10.
