Year 5/6 Measure their Learning

"Our Maths Ako plans include lots of choice, lots of fun and lots of problem solving!"

Nikkie: Our teachers have made some Ako plans for us which focus on Measurement and Time. I really enjoy our Ako plans because the teachers let us choose the ones we want to work on. Ako plans have interesting challenges and fun activities.

Ian: One of the Ako plans that I did was deciding what I wanted our school timetable to look like for a day or a week. Then I had to add up how long I spent in each of the subjects or activities. I like that I could choose what Ako plan I wanted to do and how I had to measure the time. And I just like maths.

Matai: In our Maths some of us have chosen to do an Ako plan based on making a ramp to see how far we can make three objects travel. We have been testing them to find out our results. We are working hard to get as far as possible through the Ako plan and to check if our estimates are correct.

Ava: In our Maths sessions I’ve been working on a particular Ako plan where I can make my own timetable. I’ve had to look at the time, like how many minutes I do each activity, and what I’m doing for my activity. I’ve really enjoyed being able to choose my own Ako plans and being able to have my own choice in what I want. There are so many strategies I have learnt. Like distance, time, and heaps of other things. I’m also starting to do an Ako plan called ‘What can you do 100 times in 60 seconds’ and I can choose so many different things to do. You could do a really easy one, or you could do a harder one. Let your imagination run wild...

Kyleigh: In our Maths sessions I’ve been working on this Ako plan: “how far can you run in 12 seconds.” I had to be timed by a buddy and record how far I ran. I was able to choose my own Ako plan. There are 3 different Ako plans that are on our Maths wall each week to choose from. We have about 3 or 4 days to finish one Ako plan when we are not in our Maths groups. I’ve really enjoyed Maths Ako plans and how I can choose what Ako plan I want to do.

William: Within a few maths sessions you might finish the Ako plan that asks you to do something 100 times in 60 seconds but it’s harder than you think... For example Matai, Joseph, Tristan and I did 100 football juggles in 60 seconds. It’s been fun doing this Ako plan. Mainly because our favourite sport is soccer. There is no limit of what you can do 100 times. So use your imagination. There are no restrictions. You could do something easy, for example: 100 dots in 60 seconds. Or 100 squares in 60 seconds. Or even 100 jumps, breaths, or even blinks. *Insert shrug here.*
