Changing Church

Feminine Descriptors for God. Based on terms used in “Changing Church” (Jann Aldredge-Clanton), the stories of 12 US ministers (mainly women), their lives and their theologies.

After having read this book I went back through it to write down words/phrases they had used to describe the feminine face of God.

 

Here are some of the better known ones:

 Inner Eve, Divine parent/friend, Strong mother God, Divine feminine, She who reigns in glory and majesty, Vibrant life giver, Mother of Creation, Mystery, Mother God, Mother/Father God   She Spirit (fem. In Greek), Sophia/Wisdom, Sister, Midwife, Holy Other, God/dess, Feminine, face of God, Heart of love, Holy Spirit/ female dove, She who is. Here are some others that they also mention:

 

Divine One, Guide, Poet, Liberator, Saving Grace, The Risen One, Shepherd, Holy Other, The Ground of our Being, Steadfast/Faithful One, Birther of new life, Anam Cara – Soul friend    Mother Eagle, Friend, Divine Presence, Divine Parent, Giver of life, Divine Musician, Womb of Creation, Holy Wisdom, Holy Mother, Merciful Mother God, Nursing God, Source of Compassion/Love, Creator of New Life, Soul Guide, Friend, Brother/Sister Spirit, Holy Wisdom    The Creator and her Creation, Her Church, Her/His Fullness, Glorious Majesty, Friend, God –  Our Parent, Lover, Partner, Creative Spirit, She who rides on the wings of the world.

 

Some other brief quotes that took my eye:

  • Brother/Sister Christ  

  • Glory be to the Mother, and to the Christ and to the Spirit   

  • White God/Brown God/Black God

  • God is love and only love

  • At the empty Tomb, Jesus is reported as saying, “Mary, go tell the brethren”. (There’s a sermon there!)

  • God of Abraham and  Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and Rachel. (Not just Abraham, Isaac aand Jacob)

  • Church Sign: “Would we recognise God if we saw Her?”

  • God is gender-full not gender-less

  • In the end, God is beyond any human name – male or female.
