Help Ukraine

CWS —

In the first month of war, close to 4 million people have fled Ukraine and many more are displaced inside the country. ACT Alliance (Action by Churches Together) has launched an appeal to assist those in need of food, shelter and support.

“The situation in Ukraine has moved quickly and the needs are mounting as the catastrophe of war spreads. CWS is thankful for the expertise and knowledge of ACT Alliance enabling it to respond quickly. Your donations will assist people who need food, shelter and support,” says Murray Overton, National Director.

From the first attack in February, ACT Alliance local members already working in the region began to respond, delivering emergency supplies into border areas and calling for peace.

ACT Alliance has been working in Ukraine for decades, including with people affected by the Ukraine/Russia conflict that broke out in 2014.

It has worked with local churches and other organisations to set up welcome centres and shelters on either side of the border. Staff and volunteers are distributing hot food and information to help people on the move. They are running dormitories and distributing blankets and clothes as needed. ACT Alliance will make cash grants to meet emergency needs, allowing people to meet their most urgent needs.

Svetlana (pictured) was one mother her fled with her young children from Cherkassy in central Ukraine. “I was afraid. I had no choice,” she said. The family was one of many who received food and water in a warm tent before heading to friends in Poland.

ACT Alliance is operating in Ukraine as well as in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia and Slovakia.

“News of Ukraine reminds us to pray for everyone affected by the conflict and also for those who can to make peace. Please also remember countries like Afghanistan and Tonga, living with hunger and recovering from disaster as well,” Murray adds.

CWS is inviting people to fast and pray for Ukraine, Russia and peace. It is supporting the Friday Fast for Ukraine initiative of supporters Heinke and Peter Matheson from Dunedin.
