Everil Orr Living: Continuing a Legacy of Care in the Mt Albert Community

Yohana Virgoanto - October 23, 2024

The Methodist Mission has provided aged care in the Tāmaki Makaurau suburb of Mt Albert since Rev Everill Orr initiated the first care facility on a prominent site in 1942.

A new complex is bringing a high level of modern care facilities to a new generation of residents.

The completion of The Frampton building in August last year was the third in a five-stage development of the Everil Orr Living Retirement Village. The Village, being developed by Airedale Property Trust (APT),was initially managed by the retirement village operator and developer Oceania. In March 2023, APT purchased Oceania’s management contract and is now both the operator and developer of the expansive complex that currently provides accommodation for 70 residents in independent apartments and an additional 38 residents in care. Dedicated care workers on-site 24/7 are supported by visiting nurse practitioners and a chaplain in residence.

Celebrating Reverend Everil Orr’s legacy

The decision to build a new care facility was driven by a desire to maintain Rev Orr’s legacy of providing care for the evolving needs of elderly residents. The original dated facilities had reached the end of their useful life. The new facilities provide high-quality, independent living spaces, community facilities, and extensive amenities set amidst superbly landscaped gardens.

Frampton Building: A Tribute to Our Sister

The Frampton Building was named in honour of Sister Margaret Frampton, a highly respected nurse and the Matron-in-Chief of the original Mt Albert Old People’s Settlement. Sister Frampton brought a wealth of experience to her work and was key to the early successes of aged care on the site.

The Frampton Building offers 68 care units across three levels, including eight independent living units on the top floor. Additional amenities include a library, public and private dining and lounge areas, activity rooms, and a beauty salon.

A Resident’s Journey: Finding Joy in a New Chapter

Royce Shears, a long-time resident of Mt Albert, made the personally difficult decision to move into the village’s care facility in July this year.

At 97 years old, Royce had lived in her two-storey home for much of her life. Her daughter lived nearby, but as Royce’s vision began to decline and she experienced a few falls, it became increasingly unsafe for her to live alone. Her family was enthusiastic about the move to Everil Orr; however, Royce was initially hesitant. She celebrated her 97th birthday in her beloved home with a big family party and then moved to a care suite, along with her treasured furniture and cherished pictures.

One month on, Royce has settled in and is embracing her new life with a positive and enthusiastic attitude. Her only regret is that she did not make the move earlier. She loves that her suite is warm and on one level, and she appreciates not having to worry about shopping or cooking, welcoming the opportunity to meet new people.

“I feel safe here, and my family visits regularly. I only wish I had moved years ago. It’s my greatest recommendation to anyone sitting on the fence. Coming into a new home, with all these great amenities on the side, it’s important to keep a positive mindset and embrace everything on offer.”

Looking Forward: The Future of Everil Orr Living
Construction is due to start in 2025 on the next stage of development; APT will invest $43.4 million to develop 42 new apartment units. The final two stages are set to be finished in 2026 and 2028.
