Keep the Pressure on for the Climate and People

Christian World Service has joined a new coalition calling for an end to free carbon credits as part of its commitment to climate justice.

Three quarters of existing free credits benefit four companies: NZ Steel, Methanex, Balance and NZ Aluminium. The ‘Don’t Subsidise Pollution’ campaign says these credits could be replaced with loans to help industry decarbonise and a new Carbon Border Mechanism to protect the country against imports made by producing carbon emissions. CWS encourages readers to sign the petition in support of the campaign.

So far, the world’s governments have made slow progress in keeping the global temperature rise below the goal of 1.5 degrees Celsius made in the 2015 Paris Agreement. Fossil fuel and other corporations most responsible for the climate crisis continue to make billions of dollars in profit without addressing the harm they cause. The need for global action is urgent.

ACT Alliance (Action by Churches Together) of which CWS is a member has developed a new position paper on climate justice. ACT members will take part in global negotiations like COP28 to promote climate justice, including advocating for fair Loss and Damage payments to people most affected.

Donations to CWS appeals assist small farmers, workers and their families seeking secure livelihoods and sometimes survival. Our partners share skills and resources to assist people who are grappling with the reality of rising temperatures and sea levels.

Climate disasters are becoming more frequent and severe. When they strike, it is those who are the most vulnerable who pay the biggest price. Our partners are working hard to continue to support people who need humanitarian assistance months after the disaster is over.

Please pray for climate justice, support our partners and keep pressure on our new government to make stronger commitments in the international arena.
