Free Wesley Church of Tonga 100th Anniversary Conference

MCNZ President Rev Peter Taylor and Vice President Te Rito Semu-Peyroux, Superintendent Rev Kalolo Fihaki and hundreds of members from the Vahefonua Tonga o Aotearoa representing the Methodist Church of New Zealand attended The Free Wesley Church of Tonga 100th Anniversary Conference this year.

In 1924, Queen Sālote Tupou III successfully united the Free Church of Tonga founded by King George Tupou I and the Wesleyan Methodist Church, which was still in Full Connexion with the Methodist Church of Australasia (pejoratively dubbed by Free Churchmen as the Siasi Fakaongo, or Church of the Subservient ones). The Established Church is known as the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga' (old Tongan orthography: Koe Jiaji Ueseliana Tauataina o Toga).

This year’s Conference, conducted by President Rev Dr Tevita Koloa’ia Havea, commemorates 100 years of conference since the beginning of the new Establishment Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga or The Methodist Church of Tonga. The establishment of the church as a separate entity from the Methodist Church of Australasia in 1924 marked a pivotal moment in Tonga's religious history, setting the stage for a unique spiritual journey that has deeply shaped the lives of its followers.

The Conference theme “Renew Our Hearts", served as a powerful reminder of the importance of continuous spiritual renewal and growth in one's relationship with God. It challenged us to examine our hearts, align our thoughts and actions with God's will, and cultivate a deeper sense of connection with the divine.

The Free Wesleyan Church in Tonga has been a cornerstone of the nation's identity, providing spiritual guidance, support, and a sense of community for generations of Tongans. Through its teachings, worship, and outreach efforts, the church has played a vital role in preserving Tongan traditions, values, and beliefs, while also adapting to the changing times and needs of its members.

As we look back on the past 100 years, we celebrate the resilience, dedication, and faith of all those who have contributed to the growth and success of the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga. We honour the leaders, clergy, and members who have carried the torch of faith forward, nurturing a strong and vibrant community bound together by love, service, and a shared commitment to God.

President Peter led one of the devotions based on Roman 12: 2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God”. It was an uplifting message, reflecting on the rich tapestry of history, culture, and faith that defines the church values. It draws inspiration from the past to look to the future, guided by the teachings of Christ and the spirit of unity that has sustained the church for a century.

Here's to another 100 years of fellowship, growth, and blessings for the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga. Mālō ‘Aupito.
