Touchstone April 2024

Welcome to the April edition of Touchstone

At the Connexional Office we are looking forward to the coming Easter break. The days ahead represent so much more than a long weekend. Content this month celebrates the death and resurrection of our saviour, Jesus Christ, and the transition from darkness to light when loss and despair transformed to hope and joy. Rev Keita Hotere reflects on the customs of her whanau and how they embrace the opportunity to unveil memorial headstones during Holy Week in a tradition known as Hura Kohatu. Climate change, conservation and the Christian response to climate justice are also highlighted this month. A Rocha co-founder, Peter Harris, recently visited Aotearoa to share the origins and evolution of what has become a global organisation committed to promoting and encouraging a Christian approach to conservation.

Rev John Carr shares some of the green initiatives being undertaken by his Western Bay of Plenty parish, a member of A Rocha Eco Church NZ. This week saw the launch of a unique 'MCNZ designed and released' t-shirt promoting the Climate Justice Decade. As the promotional flyer says, “the Climate Justice t-shirts are the perfect way to amplify your voice and raise awareness about the urgent need for environmental action”.

I hope you find articles, reviews and reflections that inspire and inform.

Fa'anānā Efeso Collins, a New Zealand politician, activist, and academic of the New Zealand Labour Party and the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand died suddenly on 21 February.

No One Suffers Alone

by Rev Dr Jione Havea

With the unexpected death of Efeso Collins on 21 Feb 2024, the New Zealand Parliament lost a Pasifika-affirming body, voice, and heart, from its membership. Collins was an academic and politician. He looked out for the interests of Pasifika and Māori communities and, when he joined the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand, for ecological wellbeing. A comment by the new co-leader of the Green Party, Chlöe Swarbrick, rings in my native ears: “We know as the late great Efeso Collins put it, that: ‘No one stands alone, no one succeeds alone, and no one suffers alone’.”

Finding the Sweet Spot Between the Known and The Unknown

by Rev Dr Mary Caygill

I think it would be fair to say that wherever you look, or listen into, these days there is a surplus of change and transition in the air. We have it within our political life, our work life, our church organisational life, our personal life as I, who turns 70 within the next few weeks, know all too well, into another season of the life cycle.

Adjusting the Poverty Mindset

by Rev Andrew Doubleday

I am confronted by the reality that most churches live with a poverty mindset. There never seems enough to go round. We are always looking for ways to make a little go farther. And for ways to spread the few dollars we have even thinner. Sometimes it is a matter of lifting our eyes and seeing what could be. And then risking ourselves in making an investment into it.

Building a Church Website

by Peter Lane

Creating an effective parish website requires careful planning, creativity and dedication to ensure it creates more value than it costs. Regardless of whether the objective is building community, reaching people outside of your immediate church community, improving communications, mitigating administrative overhead or all of the above, having a clear understanding of what you are trying to achieve, is the first step.
