Canoe Polo Clean Sweep in Inter-School Finals

MGS —

Our very young C2 team, consisting of Year 7-9 players, mixed boys and girls won the Open C Grade final, beating the older, bigger and previously unbeaten Shirley Boys junior team in a golden goal cliffhanger. I was impressed with the composure these young players showed in coming back from an early 0-2 deficit to tie the scores at 4-4 just before full time and then get the golden goal. It was also a joy to see how much encouragement they got from our senior players who were watching them.

Our young Senior Girls team won two titles. First they defeated Avonside to win the Girls final. Then they backed up to beat the Combined Schools team to win the Open B Grade final. Combined is a mixed boys and girls team of players from St Andrews, Lincoln and a couple of other schools. This was also a close game, with the girls winning 4-3, a great effort given that it was their second game of the afternoon. Most of our senior girls are Y10 and 11 players, so things look promising for the next few years.

The Open A Grade final was between two Middleton teams. These were selected as two even teams at the beginning of the term and Andy’s selection skills were apparent with the game going to golden goal before the A2 team finally took it out, 6-5. The golden goal was scored by Kaitlyn Adams in her third game of the afternoon.

Then at the end of the afternoon we were treated to a game between this years Senior A Boys team and a past players team. This was won by the past players, most of whom are still playing polo, some at high levels.
