New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association Championship
Tauranga 11-13 December 2020
This year Luke Mitchell and Levi Ferguson represented Middleton Grange School at Nationals in Tauranga at the start of the December holidays. The small team was largely the result of the event date being moved later due to NCEA Exams being moved, Year 12 Leadership Camp and the financial cost of an event in the North Island.
Levi was competing in the senior boys age group as a Year 11 boy, so he will still have two more years to compete in this age group. He came 11th overall out of 31 competitors in the Long Jump with a jump of 5.98 meters. In Levi’s favoured event, the High Jump, he ended 7th equal out of a strong field of 19 athletes, with a jump of 1.85m. Levi did well but was a little disappointed not to equal or better his PB (personal best) in either of his two events.
Luke decided to throw all his energy into the Senior Boys 1500m event and therefore did not do the Road Race. In the qualifying heats, Luke ran a PB of 4:12.47 coming 17th out of a field of 42 of NZ’s best senior boys. In the 1500m final, Luke improved his position to 15th overall.
A big thank you to Jamie Bennett for his help and support over many years. Thank you to Levi’s coach, Judy MacDonald for her dedication and support. Lastly, thank you to Luke Mitchell (Year 13) for his service to MGS Athletics.
