Y9s Experience the Courts

9LH pupils —

One of the most challenging things was...

...hearing the cases and understanding all the terms that the lawyers and judges used. Everything was so formal. For instance, the lawyers would always bow when they entered the court and when they exited, even when the judge wasn't looking.

The most interesting things about the courts were how much respect the judge was given and how quickly he made decisions on the consequences for the person caught.

The majority of the cases in the district courts seemed to be about stealing, armed robbery and assault and mostly younger people between 18 and 25. It was amazing how fast the court cases were presented and completed. We saw about 7 cases in less than 15 minutes.

I thought it would be louder with people yelling and arguing and objecting, but it wasn't like that at all. Most of the discussion with lawyers and possible punishments had been decided before they ever got to court.

The court environment was very secure. We had to go through security, just like at the airport.
