Immersion Day at UC

MGS —

On Friday June 11th, 2021, most Year 11 and Y12 French students went to an Immersion Day at the University of Canterbury.

They heard from various French agencies like the Alliance Française and the French Canadian ambassador spoke, too. Zoe Reason, a New Zealander, shared how learning French opened up the way to spend over five years in Europe, including a lot of time working in France.

In the various sessions, students listened to a range of topics, including some tips for NCEA. Canada was the focus so video-clips and quizzes about Canada were the springboard for language activities. At the morning break, students were treated to a slice of genuine French brioche from the Village Bakery (where we get our pastries from in the French classes).

A treasure hunt was had by all, going around the UC campus finding words to complete a French proverb. One of our students, Shylah McLintoch won a prize for participating well and generally making the most of the occasion.

To wrap it all up, everyone danced to a Canadian pop song (in French) and did (or tried to do!) the moves to go with the music. It was great fun. Vive la France!
