Epro8 Year 7-9 Competition

MGS —

The Epro8 (Engineering, problem solving, innovation) competition...

...has been a huge success with our Year 7 and 8 pupils this year. Twenty-five teams competed in lunchtime knock out challenges to win the right to represent Middleton Grange School at the recent Epro8 competition hosted in the Primary School Hall on the 7th and 8th of August. Some of the lunchtime challenges included making a working water pump, building the tallest tower out of A4 paper, making a structure from timber and a catapult. The following four teams [Little Einstein’s, Team Brainiac’s, 8BC 3 and Chicken head] represented the school, with team Chicken head [Kenny Jeong, Isaac Shin, Jed Alcayde, Linus Ling] comfortably winning the first-round competition with a score of 400 points. In that first round they needed to make a rotating rat wheel that generated electricity, a tower structure with a rotating ‘lighting rod’, and an electronic distance measuring device. They are now entered to represent the school in the semi-finals at Kirkwood Intermediate on Tuesday 20 August 2019, 5:00pm - 8:00pm.

The Epro8 (Engineering, problem solving, innovation) in class challenges with our Year 9 pupils have also been a huge success with a range of in class challenges. The team Chunky Noodles from 9SM (Laura Palmer, Jessica Hansen, Tristian Campbell, Logan King) competed at Hornby High School on Monday the 5th of August. They came 3rd and are also representing the school at the Y9/10 finals at the University of Canterbury, on Thursday 29 August 2019, 10:30am - 1:30pm.

Well done to all 200+ pupils who were involved. You competed well and hopefully developed some useful skills in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) field.
