MGS —

World Para Athletics

Will Steadman (2018 Sportsman of the Year) recently completed at the World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai. He claimed a bronze medal in the T36 400m, 5th in T36 Long Jump and just missed the T36 100m Final after running a PB. Fantastic results – well done Will!

Volleyball

We had three teams competing at the Junior Volleyball Championships in early November, with our Junior Boys claiming our best result with 5th in Div 1. All three teams will be competing at the upcoming South Island tournament next week.

The regular Monday night competition has just wrapped up, with the Y9B Girls winning the Y9 Div 2 Girls grade, while the Junior Boys finished runners up in Div 2.

Hamish MacClure Memorial T20

A beautiful evening in early November as the Old Boys XI managed to ‘stump’ the Current Pupils/Teachers XI by a close 6 runs in the Hamish MacClure Memorial T20.

While there was more swinging than an old rusty gate at times... both teams managed to produce moments of brilliance with the bat and the ball. The game was played in a spirit that demonstrated the love, joy and brothership that cricket brings to each of our lives, and truely honoured the former teacher, and cricketing legend at MGS, Mr MacClure.

Big thanks to ex-pupil Matt Johannsen for all his organisation!

Major Sports Awards

At Senior Prizegiving earlier this term we were pleased to announce our Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.

Marisa van der Meer was named Sportswoman of the Year for her achievements across a number of sports, particularly Football. Representing NZ at both U17 and U19 level, Marisa is also the school cross country champion and was a member of the 4x100m Relay team and Senior A Volleyball.

Zinan Bennett was named Sportsman of the Year for his exploits in Athletics and Adventure Racing. Zinan claimed gold medals in both disciplines at a South Island level, and his final act in a green singlet will be at the upcoming NZSS Athletics Championships in Wellington.

Two hardworking, humble and deserving winners. Congratulations to you both and we look forward to seeing what the future holds!
