Over the Queen’s Birthday weekend (5-6 June) Wen Ting Toh and Wen Qi Toh headed up to Tauranga to compete in the ITF Taekwon-Do NZ national tournament, where there were over 250 competitors from all over the country.

There, representing the South Island team and the Halswell Taekwon-Do club, they both won two medals each in their division.

Wen Ting received bronze (3rd) for patterns, and silver (2nd) for sparring (free fighting). Wen Qi received bronze for power breaking, and gold (1st) for sparring.

Even though they didn’t want to, Wen Ting and Wen Qi ended up competing against each other in an intense and very close match for gold and silver, which Wen Qi just won in the last 20 seconds of the 4 minute match.

On the 10th and 11th of June, a few students from our school went to the Model European Union hosted in Christchurch at the University of Canterbury. It was a nationwide event where students from all over New Zealand came to discuss and debate a Draft Directive covering many topics, but with a focus on climate change and human rights. Students were allocated a party, a committee and a country to represent. Over the two days, students would attend committee sessions and party sessions to discuss and debate possible amendments to the Draft Directive. However, the key event was the plenary session where all students from the different committees came together to debate and amend the Draft Directive for the last time. At the conclusion of the event, there was a prize giving ceremony where Jung-Woo Yi (Year 13) won the Best Delegate Award (1st place) which comes with a scholarship to study Europe at the University of Canterbury.

We have a number of ex-students who have recently gained selections in their chosen sports.

Marisa van der Meer has been named in the NZ Olympic Football team which heads to Tokyo shortly. Marisa was initially selected as one of four reserves, but new rules just for these Olympics allow reserves to be part of the main squad.

Will Stedman will also be in Tokyo, heading to his second Paralympic Games. Will competes in the T36 400m and Long Jump events, and he is looking to add to his haul of two bronze medals from the Rio Paralympics back in 2016.
