Hillary Challenge 2017
From 7 – 13 May a group of eight Year 12 & 13 pupils competed in what is billed ‘the toughest event for secondary school pupils in the country,’
Over the course of the week the Genesis Energy Hillary Challenge team completed in a range of initiative / problem solving / technical skills-based activities; a 2-day navigation expedition which started on the Desert Rd and finished at the Chateau Tongariro and a gruelling 6-hour multisport race consisting of trail / mud running, mountain-biking and kayaking / paddling.
The team, Holly Broom, Kayleigh Gouman, Danielle
Whitehead, Ilse van Wichen, Simon Brass, Renzo Childs, Reuben Scott and Patrick
Henkel were accompanied by Mr Barlow and Mrs Broom. Non-traveling reserves
and extremely valuable team members were Samantha Fairhall and Josh Janssen.
Holly Broom offers her perspective on the event below:
“Hillary Challenge 2017 was quite possibly the hardest but most rewarding thing I have had to do. It was mentally and physically tough. However, the lessons I learnt were invaluable. Working in a team of eight who pushed each other to the limits and sometimes over them was an incredible experience. A highlight for me was seeing how the team got behind each other and pushed to the absolute max, especially on the last day during the multi-sport race when we were all digging deep.
It was amazing to see how much support we got from family and friends back home and on behalf of the team I would like to thank all those who prayed and sent messages of encouragement to us during the week. Seeing God work through each one of us throughout the week was wonderful and I think all credit needs to go to Him for what we achieved on our week away.
I encourage anyone who enjoys a challenge, or Mr Barlow’s puns, to participate in the Hillary Challenge. The things you’ll learn about God, yourself and others will astound you. Hillary Challenge will remain a highlight for me, and for many others who have participated in the event.”
Whilst the team was disappointed to finish the week in 8th place overall (of the 12 teams) they gained a huge amount from the experience, developing teamwork, interpersonal skills, a competitive spirit and a wonderful connection to God and His creation. It is also a fabulous achievement to finish 8th in the country at this amazing event. To see what the team goes through during the week watch an overview and this Seven Sharp report.
