Winter Tournament Week 2017

MGS —

The busiest sports week on the Secondary Schools' calendar has come and gone with over 120 Middleton Grange pupils competing in six different sports across the country.

All of our teams represented the school well on and off the field of play. The week highlight was the performance of the boys' and girls' basketball teams who both qualified for the Shick National Basketball Championships in Palmerston North. There the top 24 teams in the country come together to battle it out for the New Zealand title.

  • Boys' Football performed well, making it through to the quarter final stage at the prestigious Malcolm Cowie Cup in Papakura with Luke Manning being named the Middleton Grange MVP by the team's competitors.
  • A young girls' football team gained a bunch of experience and worked their way to a 8th place finish at the Gary Sowden Trophy in Christchurch.
  • Girls' Netball had a couple of tough first round losses which limited their potential final placing but competed well for the rest of the week finishing 18th after a tough last game vs Burnside High.
  • Girls' Hockey improved their tournament placing by 6 places on last year, finishing 6th at the Jenny McDonald cup in Christchurch. This team has shown a lot of improvement over the year and with a very young core group of players will be one to watch next year.
  • The junior boys' and girls' basketball teams performed well in the South Island Junior Championships in Ashburton.
  • Princess Nacion and Joy Li finished 2nd and 3rd in the singles badminton plate section after they were knocked out of the main draw – meaning positions 6 and 7 overall (out of 9).
  • Two senior mixed teams competed in the South Island Korfball Championships.  Middleton 1 Kofball team came 2nd in a very tough tournament, just losing to Christ College/Villa Maria by 9-7. Given that a few of the players had never played together as a team, or even played before, they did amazingly well! A big thank you to Rosa Hibbert-Schooner (Y12) for her leadership in organising both teams to participate at this event. From running practices to all aspects of the tournament, her sportsmanship, the positive manner in which she conducted herself, and the enthusiasm with which she engaged with players and created opportunities for them to shine made her an absolute star!

A huge thank you also to all the staff and volunteer coaches and managers who gave up their time to travel and supervise these teams during what is a long and tiring week. Thank you all so much!
