MGS —

Athletics

Our Athletics Team had a busy few weeks, competing at the Canterbury SS Champs at Nga Puna Wai and the SISS Champs in Nelson.

The 11 athletes returned home with five South Island titles from Nelson, five second places and two third placings, along with a South Island record thanks to the Senior Girls 4x100m relay team (Gloria Angew, Fia Lai Kong, Winnie Palamo and Jasmine Prince), storming home to win in 49.48 seconds.

The week prior, a larger contingent of 35 competed at the local Canterbury SS Champs. Eight Canterbury titles were achieved, with Winnie Palamo claiming three on her own and Levi Ferguson two. Four second and six third placings completed a huge haul of podium finishes.

Volleyball

Our Senior Volleyball teams headed to Palmerston North for the NZSS Champs. Based on seedings taken from the local competitions, the boys were placed in the Premier Draw (33-65), while the Girls played in the Challenger Draw (65-100).

The boys qualified in the top half of their draw, earning a spot in Division 3. Through the playoff matches they ended up playing off for 9th/10th, going down to Scots College in their final game. They finished the tournament with 6 wins and 3 losses and in 42nd place.

The girls also qualified for the top half of their draw, winning their first four matches. The second half of the week was a lot tougher, where they were on the receiving end of four straight losses. They bounced back to win their final match in an epic five set match against Naenae College, ending 7th in Division 5 with 5 wins and 4 losses and 71st overall.

Futsal

A young Senior Boys team travelled to Wellington for the NZSS Champs, one of 35 teams competing in the senior grade. After opening the tournament with a strong 5-0 win, the boys went down twice by a goal to be relegated to the bowl section, finishing in 21st position with a 2 wins and 3 losses across the five matches played. Plenty of learnings for 2020!
