Poto Williams visits Middleton Grange School

MGS —

The school was blessed with a visit from the Honourable Poto Williams on Friday Week 10. Poto is the MP for CHCH East, the Minister for Police, Minister for Building and Construction, and associate Minister for Children and for Housing. Poto has worked extensively in the mental health and family welfare areas and is an MBA graduate from Manukau Institute of Technology. She spoke in the Grange to members of the Pasifika Studies class, 8JO as well as numerous other students. Poto Williams spoke about her career, her passion, and her reasons for doing what she has done. She also spoke about the whakapapa of the Cook Islands and the close connection it has to New Zealand. Interestingly, Poto discovered that she has a family member at Middleton Grange, Grace Neilson, who is a member of the Pasifika Studies class.

Poto also answered a series of questions from the Pasifika Studies class about a variety of subjects including her unique challenges as a female and Polynesian MP, her belief systems; challenges in instituting reform in the police or mental health arenas; her opinion on a Cook Island name change, and many other subjects. Poto was invited to the school by Mr Lālahi, who has been given the task of creating a combined course for Year 11-13 students studying the history and culture of the many varied nations in the South Pacific Ocean. Being that Pasifika people and culture are important and ingrained in the story of Aotearoa, the course utilizes Senior Social Studies standards to offer a robust curriculum that is suitable for University Entrance and future study options.
