An afternoon at The Maples

MGS —

This year, the Service Team...

...has had a major focus on the wider community and has had a special involvement with the residents at The Maples Retirement Village with fortnightly visits. During these visits, the team and I have had a chance to sit down and talk, play games and every now and again have a play on the piano, spending quality time with the elderly. On one special visit, I planned a small concert for the rest home as a way to not only connect both students and residents, but a way to involve those who wanted to share their talents. With a variety of talent, from violin players and a pianist, to singers and a small insight into Maori culture with a small group from the Kapa Haka, it was amazing just to see the smiles on the resident’s faces. As soon as we walked into the room where we were performing, their faces lit up as we set up. It was an amazing chance to share our faith through a beautiful performance of music and to really offer a different light on the younger generation in comparison to how media may present us. A heart-warming afternoon, with sunlight streaming through the windows, it was a memorable, eye-opening experience which brought joy to a lot of the residents at The Maples and I am extremely grateful to have been able to share this with the students involved. Special thanks to everyone involved in this event.
