1) From the Principal

Kia ora Parents, Caregivers and Whanau,

This week has seen the continuation of PPTA industrial action with the rostering home of 2-year levels per day, Monday – Thursday. We know this is hugely disruptive to both parents and students alike, and we as a staff want this matter resolved as quickly as possible to ensure our students are fully supported with their learning.

Can I remind you that this decision to continue with industrial action, including the rostering home of students is a national PPTA decision, voted on by approx. 20,000 members across NZ.

Can I please encourage you to email your local MP or the Minister of Education, Jan Tinetti j.tinetti@ministers.govt.nz or even the Ministry of Education enquiries.national@education.govt.nz to express your frustration with the industrial action and the impact it is having on our students, and the need for a speedy resolution to this situation.

This week also saw the implementation of the literacy and numeracy co-requisite assessments for Year 10. This is the first time that we have implemented this at our school, and I would like to thank all of our year 10 students for their cooperation and support with this. See below for more details and a photo.

We also enjoyed our annual International Food Fair on Tuesday which was another outstanding success, and our Primary Movie Night on Thursday, as well as the Shrek Production Camp on Thursday and Friday.

All in all, another very busy but enjoyable and fulfilling week at Middleton Grange School, for which we thank our Lord for His faithfulness and provision.

SENIOR COLLEGE FORMAL:

This year’s Senior College formal was held last Friday evening at the Addington Showgrounds with approx. 300 students from year 12 and 13 attending and approx. 20 staff. It was a wonderful evening of enjoying each other’s company, dancing, talking, having lots of photos taken and being well looked after with food and refreshments.

Thank you to the formal committee and the senior college staff for the many hours of organising that went into making this one of the better senior college formals to date.

YEAR 10 LITERACY & NUMERACY ASSESSMENTS:

This year we have seen the introduction of the new literacy & numeracy co-requisites for NCEA which we are offering to our students at Year 10. As from 2024 these will be a required component for students to pass NCEA and they will have multiple opportunities to sit them during the year and over subsequent years.

This year we have chosen to pilot these with our Year 10 students, so they become familiar with more formal NCEA exams and conditions. The assessments included a Reading, Writing and a Numeracy exam which were held over three separate days. Students will likely get their results back in Term 3 and for those who need to, they will have another opportunity to pass these exams in October of this year.

INTERNATIONAL FOOD FAIR:

On Thursday lunchtime our International College hosted an International Food Fair with approx. 15 different food stalls offering a wide range of international foods.

Thank you to the International College staff and student and parent helpers who made this such a wonderful event. It was great to see the different cultures within our school working and fellowshipping together in such a positive way, and the food was delicious – well done to all! (See photos below)

PRIMARY SCHOOL MOVIE NIGHT:

Thank you to the MGS Parent Group for organising this movie night for our primary school children. This has become an annual event that the children absolutely love. Parents and children get to enjoy a great movie – Minions - The Rise of Gru, as well as enjoy some food and fellowship. Hopefully it wasn’t too late a night for the children.

WORLD VISION 40 HOUR CHALLENGE:

The World Vision 40-hour Famine is this weekend, 16-18 June. Thank you to all those involved in supporting this very worthy cause. The Fridge Radio (88.3FM) are also operating a 40-hour fundraiser this weekend in support of the World Vision 40-hour challenge. The focus this year is on providing clean drinking water to those people in need overseas.

PPTA INDUSTRIAL ACTION:

PLEASE REFER TO A SEPARATE EMAIL THAT WAS SENT OUT LAST WEEK ABOUT ROSTERING HOME OF YEAR 9-13 STUDENTS FOR WEEKS 8 – 10 DUE TO THE CONTINUATION OF INDUSTRIAL ACTION BY PPTA MEMBERS.

See below for a summary of the rostering home for each day. Next week is Week 9.

PPTA PAID UNION MEETING: on Wednesday 28 June 9.00am – 11.00am (Week 10)

On Wednesday 28 June, from 9.00am – 11.00am, Canterbury Secondary School PPTA members / teachers will be attending a Paid Union Meeting (PUM) to discuss the latest negotiations and progress being made with the government on their teachers’ collective agreement.

Year 11 & Year 12 students are due to be rostered home on this day already.

School will operate as normal for ALL Year 1 – 10 students on this day, as Year 9-10 classes will be covered by non-union members. The only adjustment will be that Year 7-10 students will finish at 2.30pm. The only other change will be for Year 13 students who will have a later start at 11.40am due to the PUM and inability to staff their classes.

World Vision

3) Term 3 Year 7-13 Parent Pupil Teacher Conferences (PPTC)

These will be held in K Block rooms (The Grange Theatre) from 1.30pm to 6.30pm on:

Thursday 20 July (Week 1, Term 3)

Please mark these dates in your calendar.

4) Term 3 Year 7-13 Parent Pupil Teacher Conferences (PPTC)

School for Y7-13 students will finish at 12.40pm on Thursday 20 July to allow time for teachers to prepare for these.

Information on how to book the conferences will be attached to the notices emailed home on Wednesday 28 June (last day of Term 2) and put on the school app. If you do not have the school app, instructions on how to load it are below.

If you have no access to the internet, please contact us on 348 9826 Ext 201 at the beginning of Term 3 and we will be able to help.

5) Lost Property

We would really like to return some of the lost property we have to its owners. Please take a look at the following photos and ask your child/ren to look also. If you recognise something please come and collect from Student Services. As well as the photos below we have a lot of unnamed school uniform (larger sizes) and most like Middle School or Senior College students.

Next Friday we will be displaying all lost property during the lunch break. If your child/ren have misplaced an un-named item they are welcome to replace it with an un-named item from our table. All named items are returned directly to students.

6) Canteen Shop Price Increases

This is to advise due to continuing canteen food price increases, we have had to similarly increase the price of some of our food items effective from Monday 19 June 2023. We have tried to absorb these increases over a period but regrettably can no longer do so. The Canteen prices have not been increased for some time now and still represent good value compared to other places.

7) Flute Tutor Needed

We are looking for someone to join our vibrant Itinerant Music Programme. An ideal candidate can teach Flute to both primary and secondary aged students, and bring enthusiasm and joy into developing a strong flute programme. This is an exciting opportunity for a trained and experienced tutor to become part of the Middleton Music Academy. Email s.bisseker@middleton.school.nz by Monday 26th June 2023, with expressions of interest.

8) 40 Hour Fridge

"The Fridge Radio is hosting the 40 hour Fridge where we will be live streaming for 40 hours straight as part of the 40 hour famine challenge.
