Joshua Tang - Rotary National Science and Technology Forum 2025

MGS —

The Rotary National Science and Technology Forum...

...is a programme promoted, organised, and operated by the Rotary Clubs of New Zealand. Joshua Tang, now in Year 13, was selected to be part of the forum in Auckland during the last two weeks of the holidays, 11th–25th January. This highly regarded programme has a 30+ year history of providing high achieving, well-rounded Year 12 science, mathematics and technology students with one of the best experiences of their lives.

For 14 days Josh was with 168 like-minded students exploring tertiary-level science, mathematics and technology. Participants got the opportunity to experience university life and get a real taste of ‘going to Uni’ by staying in the halls of residence at the University of Auckland. According to Josh, the food was really good, and the accommodation was excellent.

Nonetheless, the experience was physically very active, and Josh who is considering a career in bioinformatics, really appreciated the forum. He was able to visit and explore academic facilities including Landcare Research and the Auckland University’s Department of Medical and Health Sciences, Liggins Institute, and Biomedical Imaging Research Unit.

Visiting actual research labs was complemented by presentations and lectures from working scientists. Josh got a practical insight into the full range of university degrees available at, not only the University of Auckland, but also AUT and Massey. Josh also enjoyed socializing with like-minded students. Their activities included designing and presenting innovative ideas to 'shareholders’, a volleyball competition, debating opportunities, and even a talent show.

One of the things that Josh most appreciated was the other Christian students he met during the forum. While the event itself was decidedly secular, he did not find it at all unwelcoming and a Christian would be unlikely to find themselves alone there.
