School Sports' Successes Lead to Greater Things

MGS —

Congratulations Sofia and Guy!

Local Success Turns Into an International Opportunity

You may remember hearing about Y12 pupil Sofia Kennedy’s success at the Canterbury and New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships where she earned a place on the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country team that competed in Australia. Sofia has just received word that, due to her performance in Australia, she has been selected in the New Zealand team to compete at the World Championships in Paris!

The success has been somewhat unexpected for Sofia as she has been focussing on her Basketball aspirations over the past couple of years, so to achieve this level of success in such a short time frame after returning to the sport is outstanding.

A Season to Remember on the Bike

Y11 Pupil Guy Yarrell has been putting together quality performances on the bike throughout the year and this has continued in recent weeks. Guy took home 2nd place overall in the South Island Secondary Schools road race Championships in Christchurch in August and followed that up with another 2nd place finish at the prestigious Cycling New Zealand Southern Tour (previously known as the Cuddon’s tour of Blenheim).

Guy will be looking to add to his medal collection during the school holidays when he competes with 3 other pupils at the South Island Mountain Biking Championship in Dunedin.
