National Bronze Medal for Canoe Polo Girls!

MGS —

The Middleton Grange Senior Girls...

...won bronze in the NZ Secondary Schools Canoe Polo Championships held in Feilding March 16th-18th. This is very significant as it is the first Division 1 medal by a South Island team for 26 years. In 1992 the Hagley Senior Girls won gold. The sport is very North Island dominated.

The girls finally lost a cliff-hanger semi-final against Karamu HS of Hastings to an extra time golden goal after scores had been locked 2-2 at full time. This was their only loss in the tournament and was heart-breaking as they had led 2-1 until 12 seconds from the end of normal time. However, they showed immense character by bouncing back to beat Palmerston North GHS 5-4 in another thriller in the 3rd-4th playoff. The gold medallists were Taradale HS of Napier who had been beaten by Middleton in pool play.

Two Middleton players, Emma Malcolm and Ava White were selected for the tournament team.

Our young Senior Boys team also did outstandingly well, finishing 5th in Division 2 to rank 12th in NZ.
