Science & Technology Fair Recognition

The NIWA Canterbury and Westland Schools’ Science and Technology Fair was held at the end of Term 3, at the Ara Institute of Canterbury. The Science Fair has been running for more than 30 years and attracts entries from  pupils throughout the Canterbury and Westland area. This year there were more than 250 entries.

Marion Dumaine (Year 11) carried out a thorough investigation into the interaction between nitrogen fertilizers and ammonia oxidizing bacteria and how this impacts of nitrate pollution of waterways. Her project titled “Nitrogen Bugs Cause Pollution” involved a significant amount of experiment work and data analysis.

Marion’s project was recognized at the prize giving where she received and award from the Canterbury Branch of the Royal Society for “excellent in experimental design, approach and interpretation”. This was great recognition of the excellent work she had done in designing and carrying out her Science Fair project.
