South Island Schools Canoe Polo Competition (August 13-15, 2021)

MGS —

Just before lockdown, six MGS teams competed in the annual South Island Schools Canoe Polo competition in Oamaru. It was a very busy weekend of competition with almost 30 students from our school competing. We had some excellent results, highlighted by our Senior Open A Team winning a very tense final (by one goal) over Dunstan High School.

Results:

Junior Open (7 Teams):

  • MGS Junior Open A: 3rd
  • MGS Junior Open B: 7th

Junior Girls (2 Teams):

  • MGS Junior Girls: 1st

Senior Girls (3 Teams):

  • MGS Senior Girls: 2nd

Senior Open (8 Teams):

  • MGS Senior Open A: 1st
  • MGS Senior Open B: 5th

Four of our boys (Levi Ward, Dan Malcolm, Sam Freeman, Cam Boag) and three of our girls (Debbie Malcolm, Abby Ward and Alex Prince) were named in the Tournament Teams.

A superb weekend of intense competition with great parent help, superb coaching and even a visit from some ex-MGS students who came up from Dunedin and down from Christchurch to support the teams. Peter Anderson (MGS teacher) also announced his stepping down from his role as South Island Schools Canoe Polo Coordinator, a role he has held for a number of years.
